Accuracy and verification

We aim to be accurate before we aim to be first. We verify facts with primary sources wherever possible: official documents, data releases, court records and on-the-record interviews. When we rely on another news organisation's reporting, we say so and link to it. Every news story lists its main sources at the end.

We distinguish clearly between news reporting, analysis and opinion. Figures are given with their date and source, and we avoid presenting estimates as certainties.

Independence

Editorial decisions are made on news value alone. We do not accept payment for coverage, and we do not let advertisers, funders or partners review or approve stories before publication. Any sponsored content will be clearly labelled.

Fairness

We seek comment from people and organisations facing significant criticism in our reporting, and we give them reasonable time to respond. We report allegations as allegations, and we do not publish unverified claims about private individuals.

Sources

We prefer named, on-the-record sources. We grant anonymity only when a source faces a real risk of harm and the information is important and cannot be obtained otherwise; when we do, we explain why.

Images

We credit photographs and graphics. Illustrations and data graphics are labelled as such, and we do not alter news photographs in ways that mislead.

Use of technology and AI

We may use software tools, including AI tools, to help with research, transcription, translation and formatting. A person on our editorial team reviews and is responsible for everything we publish, and we do not publish AI-generated images as if they were real photographs.

Corrections policy

When we make a factual error, we correct it promptly and transparently:

  • The corrected article carries a Correction note explaining what was wrong and when it was fixed.
  • The article's Updated date changes to the date of the correction.
  • Minor fixes that do not change the meaning (spelling, typos) may be made without a note.
  • We do not delete published stories to hide errors. In rare legal or safety cases where we must remove content, we will say so.

To request a correction, email info@theview.africa with the article link and what you believe is inaccurate. We aim to respond within two working days.
