  • The commercially driven fund will finance oil palm, aquaculture, cassava, cocoa, rice, horticulture, livestock and marine projects.

Nigeria has launched a $500 million fund to invest in farming across the Niger Delta. Vice-President Kashim Shettima unveiled the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Fund in Abuja on 15 July 2026, at the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Summit.

What it will fund

The fund is designed as a commercially driven investment platform. It will finance projects across the farming value chain, including:

  • oil palm, cocoa and cassava;
  • rice and horticulture;
  • aquaculture, livestock and marine resources.

It is expected to draw money from multilateral development institutions, commercial lenders and private investors.

Beyond oil

The Niger Delta is best known for oil, which has brought wealth to the state but also pollution and conflict to many communities. The government wants the region to become a major hub for non-oil exports, raising food production and creating jobs.

Why it matters

Food prices have been one of the biggest pressures on Nigerian households. Investing in the Delta's fertile land and waters could raise output and reduce dependence on imports. The test will be whether the fund attracts private capital and reaches farmers on the ground.
